Use of Infrared Thermography with Draft Test
Currently, we are using infrared testing only for locating drafts/air leakage. For a draft test, we use a blower door to depressurize a house and accentuate the movement of air into the house. There are three ways to detect that air infiltration (listed in order of effectiveness): |
|
| 1. |
Sense on touch: using the hand to detect movement of air from the outside. |
| 2. |
Chemical smoke:a small pencilshaped device generates a thin plume of smoke. When the smoke is introduced to a suspected leaky area, a change in direction of the smoke indicates a draft. |
|
|
| 3. |
Infrared thermography:looking through the viewfinder of an infrared (IR) camera, the exact location of drafts can be pinpointed. Unlike smoke and hand tests, IR will identify all the leaks in the camera’s field of view. Infrared can only be done in winter when the outside temperature is below zero degrees Celsius. |
