How The Blower Door Test Works
To determine and remedy draftiness in your home, we use a device called a blower door. The blower door is a metal frame with a vinyl sheet and a large fan that is set up on an external doorway. Gauges and a computer are attached to the framework. (center Photo above) |

Essentially, the blower door works by lowering the pressure in the home and measuring the amount of air flowing out through the fan. The amount of air going out equals the amount of air flowing in through all the holes in the home. The draft test (blower door test) provides us with important pieces of data. |

The blower door can also be used to determine where the holes are. To do this, we turn the fan on so that a constant negative pressure is maintained and all drafts are accentuated. A tour is then made throughout the home identifying where all the discernable holes are located. |
